Cliffe House was built by James Temple around 1745 as a boarding school for approximately 120 boys. The school consisted of two buildings with a lane between. At its height it was described as one of the best commercially run schools in the county. In 1874 the school was sold to Dr. Cripps who continued as headmaster. Sometime later Dr. Cripps and his wife turned the school into a boarding house for summer visitors. Eventually , having acquired an alcohol licence, the business became known as Cliffe Hotel and Boarding During World War I the hotel carried on being occupied by mostly naval and other military personnel. World War II saw it being used as the headquarters for civil defence and was operational throughout the war. In 1968 Cliffe House was sold separately from the Cliffe Hotel and was used again as a boarding house but not very successfully. In 1976 it was purchased by the St Margaret's Bay Trust and turned into flats. Having been sold again and refurbished throughout in 2006, Cliffe House has been brought well and truly into the 21st Century, as No. 4 will prove to you. Furnished to a very high standard it offers you a luxurious holiday home on the first floor of this historic house. St Margarets Bay, just a short drive away, sits at the foot of the famous White Cliffs, just three miles from Dover harbour. It is down in the bay you are at your closest to France, approximately 18 miles away. | ||||||
