Dover Castle

With its Norman Keep and Secret Wartime Tunnels, Dover Castle is a superb place to spend a day during your visit to East Kent.

 

Walmer Castle and Gardens

Former coastal artillery fort, often visited by the Duke of Wellington.  Official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports.

 

Deal Castle

Deal Castle is one of the finest Tudor artillery works in England.

St Augustine's Abbey, Canterbury

This great abbey, marking the rebirth of Christianity in southern England, was founded in AD597 by St Augustine.

 

South Foreland Lighthouse

This historic building was the site of Faraday’s work in pioneering the use of electricity in lighthouses, and was the first to display an electrically powered signal. South Foreland was also used by Marconi for his successful wireless telegraphy experiments in 1898.

 

Goodnestone Park Gardens

 

One of the finest gardens in Kent, celebrating its 300th anniversary in 2004.

 

 

Coast and Countryside  
The White Cliffs of Dover (Langdon Cliff)

A fantastic view over Dover's Eastern Docks, and a good starting point for walks over the White Cliffs to South Foreland Lighthouse and the picturesque village of St Margarets.

 

Samphire Hoe

 

Samphire Hoe is sometimes referred to as the newest part of England.  It is built from material removed during the construction of the Channel Tunnel, and is now a nature reserve.
